Scuba tank refilling: how it works, where to do it, how much it costs
Refilling is the most repetitive operation in diving and the one given the least thought. As long as you dive with a dive center, the cylinder comes filled and the issue doesn't arise.
It arises when the number of dives increases, when schedules stop coinciding with those of the refiller, or when you start using multiple cylinders per outing. At that point, the question most often asked — is it worth buying a compressor? — has a less obvious answer than it seems.
The three ways to get a filled cylinder
Refilling with third parties. Dive center, shop, club. You pay per refill, no capital is tied up, no maintenance is required. In return, you depend on others' schedules and availability, and you don't have direct visibility into the status of the system producing the air.
Own compressor. Complete autonomy over schedules and locations, and direct control over air quality. In return, an initial investment, periodic maintenance, and an installation constraint — electrical power, space, noise.
Transfilling. The transfer of gas from a higher-pressure cylinder to a lower-pressure one, through a dedicated hose. It's not an autonomous third way: pressures equalize, so you don't fill an empty cylinder to its nominal pressure, and a filled source is still needed. It's useful for topping up, not for refilling.
The calculation to make beforehand
The economic motivation is the most frequently cited and the least convincing. It's worth putting it into numbers.
The price of a single refill varies greatly by area and type of facility, so it's a parameter, not a fixed data point: the graph considers three. The price of the compressor, however, is a fixed data point — the Icon LSE, the entry-level model, is listed at 2,533 euros.
Even in the most favorable purchase scenario, where a refill costs 10 euros, it takes over two hundred and fifty refills to break even on the initial outlay alone. What you really buy with a compressor
A compressor is justified by other factors, which don't appear in the graph because they don't have a price.
Independence from schedules. This is the most tangible motivation. Being able to fill the evening before, or upon returning from an outing, changes the organization for frequent divers who don't have a convenient dive center.
Control over the air. With your own system, you know the location of the air intake, the condition of the filter cartridges, and the maintenance history. These are the three elements on which air quality depends, and with a third-party refill, you only know them if you ask and receive an answer.
Refilling in places without service. Boat, dock, expedition. This is why versions with internal combustion engines exist.
Those who fill for a team or for training are in a different situation: the number of refills increases by an order of magnitude, and with it the need for quietness and long cycles, which points towards cabinet-enclosed machines like the Mini Silent series.
Connections: DIN 232, DIN 300, INT
A detail that blocks more refills than expected is the connection. The compressor hose ends with a fitting, and that fitting must match the cylinder valve.
- DIN 232 — threaded, five threads, for cylinders with operating pressure up to 232 bar;
- DIN 300 — threaded, seven threads, for cylinders up to 300 bar; a 300 valve accepts a DIN 232 regulator, while the reverse is not possible;
- INT or YOKE — clamp, 232 bar, common in the recreational world and in rentals.
Portable compressors come standard with a single connection, to be chosen at the time of order. Those with cylinders with different valves must provide for the second, such as the DIN 232 or 300 cylinder connection, otherwise they will have a machine that cannot fill half of their cylinder fleet.
Refilling where the system is unknown
During travel, or when relying on unfamiliar facilities, air quality becomes a variable that is not controlled. The questions to ask are few and legitimate: where is the compressor's air intake located, how often are the filter cartridges replaced, and when was the last air analysis performed.

This is the activity most often underestimated during purchase, and it is also the one that determines whether, after five years, the machine still produces compliant air.

The question "is a compressor worth it" has an economic answer that is almost always negative for personal use, and an operational answer that depends on three factors: how many refills are actually needed, how much the dependence on others' schedules weighs, and how important it is to be able to answer for oneself the question of how the air you breathe was produced.
Those who answer "few, little, little" already have the best solution: continue to have their cylinders refilled, and carry a personal filter when the system is unknown.
